Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh Says,

Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said that on permanent cooperation between Nepali Congress (NC) and Unified Marxist Leninist (UML) for the purpose of lasting peace and democracy through the elections of Constituent Assembly (CA) in Nepal, reports Kantipur daily. Having backed eight party unity since 12-point pact till the formation of interim parliament and interim government, India has now laid special emphasis on NC-UML unity after analysing Maoists' recent activities. The daily quotes sources as saying that Indian PM expressed dissatisfaction over Maoists' behaviour against expectations during his meeting with a team of UML leaders led by its general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal in New Delhi, on Tuesday. The daily also quotes a UML leader who attended the meeting as saying that India has raised suspicions against Maoists over the extortion and YCL activities. The Indian PM viewed that unity between two largest constituents of seven party alliance – NC and UML – will put pressure on Maoists to transform into democratic force. India's advice to the UML to cooperate with NC has come at a time when there were talks about forging broader communist unity. The meeting took place at Indian PM's residence at 7 Race Course Road. At the meeting the UML side raised issues like implementation of Mahakali treaty and repatriation of Bhutanese refugees, apart from current political issues. nepalnews.com sd Jun 06 07

British actress Joanna Lumley is backing an aging Nepali Gurkha's bid to win the right to live in Britain, revealing that he helped save her father's life, a report said Thursday.

Lumley, star of the 1970s hit The New Avengers and more recently of the hit comedy Absolutely Fabulous, is backing the application of 84-year-old Tul Bahadur Pun, who won the Victoria Cross in World War II.

"I've known the name Bahadur Pun since I was four. He was an absolute hero in my house," the Indian-born actress said, telling how Pun risked his life in 1944 to rescue her father, Captain James Lumley, from Japanese machine-gunners.

"I don't know exactly what happened on that battlefield in 1944 because war was so grim back then…But what I do know is that it was his bravery that saved so many lives, including my dad's," she told the Daily Mirror.

The newspaper reported that Pun's application to live in Britain had been refused, but said his lawyers are due to appeal before the immigration courts in August.

It added that the Gurkha veteran has a heart condition, asthma, diabetes and high blood pressure, and requires daily medication which is not always available where he lives.

"We own this man a huge debt. It's disgraceful he could be treated so badly by our government," said Lumley.

Retired Gurkha soldiers staged a mass protest in London in March over Britain's refusal to give them full pensions and other rights here.
